Jesse and Beulah Cox did not have any children, but had such big hearts and wallets. The one most important thing to Jesse was education, and IU was his #1.
Beulah died, and Jesse after her just six years ago. In their midst, they left a heap of cash and a dream for college students which became the Cox Scholars.
For those who don't know, there are four different programs running dependent on the college student's interest: Cox Research, Cox Engagement, Cox Exploratory, and Cox Legacy. I am a Cox Exploratory Scholar and from experience, have learned how important this couple has been to my life in college and how massive their impact has been on hundreds of students who have benefited greatly from the extra money they gave to the university.
When the other scholars and I first arrived at the Coxhall Gardens, we were amazed. 125 acres of land given by Jesse to Hamilton County Parks and Rec in order to make use of the land... was astounding. Breathtaking greens surrounded us and we worked on them :)
The man we talked to really summed it up for all of us:
We, the Cox Scholars, are Jesse and Beulah's legacy. We are their children. We are what they held most dear at the end of the day when they could look back on their whole life and pick something greater. We are their greatest.
Thank you, Lord, for these two, their generosity, and their legacy. Without them, us Cox Scholars could not be here.
